About MeThis side plate is glazed in bands of brown hawthorn ash glaze and reddish-brown iron slip. A pale green slip has been feathered combed in parallel stripes to create the pattern.
Edward Hughes frequently incorporated wood ash, obtained from local hardwoods, in his glazes. When fired at a high temprature the glazes achieved rich mottled colours, reflecting the Cumbrian landscape where Hughes lived and worked.
