About MeA stoneware shallow dish which is glazed all over in a blue-green streaked glaze, possibly Dalemain wood ash, over a reddish-brown tenmoku, most evident as dots and splashes around the rim. A hawthorn ash glaze runs down to the centre and is feathered with a herringbone pattern reminiscent of pine needles.
Edward Hughes frequently incorporated wood ash, obtained from local hardwoods, in his glazes. When fired at a high temprature the glazes achieved rich mottled colours, reflecting the Cumbrian landscape where Hughes lived and worked. He named his glazes after their origin, including Dalemain, the country house near Ullswater.
